Nearly 40 middle school and high school runners attended Big River Winter Distance Camp from December 27-30. An annual tradition in its 9th year, camp offers the perfect event for kids looking to stay active over winter break and make some new running friends. Camp Director Mark Spewak brings a monsterous level of enthusiasm and his approach that encourages “PMA” or Positive Mental Attitude really resonate with the campers.
Campers made some memories running in the cold, consistent rain the first two days of camp. Luckily indoor activities such as “fireside chats”, trivia, yoga and stretching with Metro Power Yoga, a college panel and other inspiring talks kept campers entertained and learning. Camp culminated in a fun indoor track meet at MICDS. Everyone raced a mile, some even achieving PRs! The ‘meet’ culminated in the infamous banana 400m relay. Six teams took part with the anchor leg having to finish a banana upon completion. If you ask campers about their favorite part of camp…they will probably say the Nike hooded sweatshirts or the awesome lunches!
Unique, motivating and inspiring, Big River Winter Distance Camp is a great way for the staff to “stay feeling young” according to Big River Running Company founder and owner, Matt Helbig. We are sure that the counsellors couldn’t agree more!
